You’ll find our backpackers´ mansion perched on the “Miradouro do Sanata Catarina”, overlooking the river and the Ponte (Bridge) ¨25 de Abril¨. Alive with fluttering laundry, regal buildings and balcony gossip Santa Catarina is smack in the middle of Lisbon’s cultural and entertainment life. The adjacent neighbourhood of Chiado is perfect for an afternoon of shopping or just loitering in cafes. At night, a few steps from our front door, the famous “Barrio Alto” comes to life. The storefronts that were shuttered before have burst open, revealing an endless array of small bars, the decoration of which seems to have been left to young art students and fashion designers. Add plastic cups and no covers and you have one of Europe’s hottest and cheapest nightspots.

In the light of day, Lisbon is breathtakingly beautiful. There are steep hills, clanging cable cars, azure skies with sweeping vistas of bay, bridges and the vast expanse of ocean beyond, as well as an over-the-top architectural bent.

Whether you are exploring monuments to colonial power in Belem, hiking through the historic Alfama, tracking down the melancholic sighs of Fado, making your way to Sintra or heading off to the beach for the day, our staff, well versed in the art of travel, can offer tips and advice on how best to navigate the city.

Santa Apolonia (train station) Bus Cost €1.20, estimated time: 20 min.

Leave Santa Apolonia out of the main entrance. Ahead on your left you will see a bus
stops. Catch the 746 Bus (Estação Damaia), until Praça do Comércio (5th stop, huge yellow
building surrounding square). Head straight through the big Arch. Cross three streets
and at the third, Rua da Conceiçao, catch the 28 tram (yellow trolley car) in the direction
Estrella. Get off at Calhariz /Bica (5th stop). When you get off, cross over and follow
down the street Marechal Saldanha until you arrive at the Miradouro de Santa Catarina.
You will know you are there when you see the amazing view of the bridge and river. Look
to your right and at the bottom of teh hill you see a big yellow house with the Palm tree.
That´s your Oasis, Rua Santa Catarina 24. The main entrance is on the left side of the
building.

**Metro: before entering the metro you will need to purchase a ticket. Look for large blue
machines, with touch screens. Touch "billete simples", then "Sim". Enter € 0.75 and collect
your ticket.

Oriente (bus station) Metro cost: € 0.75, estimated time: 45 min.

When you arrive to Oriente do not be overwhelmed by the huge structure you now see.
Look for signs for the Metro. It is below the big grey structure. Once at the metro look for
the Red line with direction Alameda. When you arrive to Alameda, switch to the green
line, direction Cais de Sodré. Take the green line until you reach the stop Baixa Chiado.
Then follow the directions below.


Sete Rios (bus station) Metro Cost: € 0.75, estimated time: 30 min.

When you come out of the bus station take the stairs (or elevator) down. In front of the
stairs you will see a large building that is both a train station and metro station. Follow the
signs for the Metro station. Once at the metro station take the blue line direction Baixa
Chiado. Then follow the directions below.

When you arrive, head upstairs where there are two exits. Leave through the one marked
Largo do Chiado. After exiting you will see a building marked Fidelidade Mundial. From
there look right and you will see a huge plaza, Praça Luis de Camões. In plaza look for a
bank called Caixa Geral de Depósitos, and beside it a street named Rua do Loreto. Follow
that up. You will know you are heading in the right direction if you see a store with a
yellow taxi cab sticking out. Continue on Rua do Loreto until you come to Rua Marechal
Saldanha. Take a left on this street, and follow it until you arrive at the Miradouro de
Santa Catarina. You will know you are there when you see the amazing view of the bridge
and river. Look to the right and at the bottom of the hill you will see the big yellow house
with the Palm tree. That’s your Oasis, Rua de Santa Catarina 24. The main entrance is on
the left side of the building.

Airport Bus cost: €1.20, estimated time: 40 min

Head out of the airport, in front of the main entrance you will see a bus stop marked by a
yellow sign. There you can catch bus 45 direction Cais de Sodré (runs 7-24hs). There is
another bus called the Aerobus, which is more expensive and follows the same route -
don’t take it. After about 20 mins, get off the bus at Restauradores. (Huge pink granite
Art Deco building that says Eden Teatro). From that stop, head towards Hotel Avenida
Palace. On the corner you will find Rua 1º de Dezembro. Follow that street until it ends
then on your left, you see Rua do Camões. Follow that street up until you reach Rua
Garret. (Large shopping mall on your left called Armazéns do Chiado). Take Rua Garrett to
the right and follow it until you reach Praça Luís de Camões. There you find the Metro of
Baixa Chiado and you can follow the directions above.
