There?s a lot to do in Galway, whether your taste is for active sports or more gentle leisurely pursuits. The city enjoys clean air, has five blue flag beaches, forest walks and magnificent scenery. For the sporting enthusiast, why not try sailing, fishing, surfing, bowling, rowing, tennis, horse riding, and greyhound racing or shooting? Or perhaps a relaxing stroll on the Salthill Promenade! Galway boasts some of the finest golf courses with spectacular views of the countryside and Galway Bay. Many of these are within reach of Galway, just a short drive away. Only 10 minutes walk from Glasán is the recently refurbished Kingfisher Club with a 25 meters, 6 lane deck-level swimming pool plus kiddies pool, which ensures a great days fun for all the family.
Shopping is an ideal all weather pastime and there are a fine variety of outlets from craft shops to department stores. The main shopping area is from Eyre Square down to Shop Street. Other shopping centers are based on the Headford Road, Terryland and Westside. There is also a great market on Saturday mornings beside St Nicholas?s church selling everything from vegetables to paintings. Some of the local and national craft ware shops include Galway Irish Crystal and Judy Greene Pottery.
Galway prides itself on being a city, which welcomes families and accordingly has many facilities for the young. The Atlantaquaria, Leisure Land, Turoe Pet Farm and Leisure Park, and The Kingfisher Club are just a few to mention.
Throughout the year, entertainment takes place in theatres and pubs. Winter in Galway is busy, but in Summer the activity is non-stop. Traditional Irish music and dance form only a small part of the social scene. Galway Druid Theatre, The Town Hall Theatre, The Black Box and Taibhdhearc Theatres are known internationally. For the young and young at heart, there are many lively Night clubs and Comedy Clubs in both the City Centre and Salthill.
In Galway, our heritage, our culture, our language and our music are all part of what we are. Ours is a cheerful festival city, playing host to major international events like The Galway Races, The Galway Oyster Festival, The Clarenbridge Oyster Festival, The Galway Arts Festival and The Galway Film Fleadh. Galwegians are also extremely proud of their sportsmanship and skill in all games of Rugby, Soccer, Gaelic Football, Hurling and Racing.
Galway is the gateway to beautiful Connemara and the Gaeltacht, the Burren and the unique Aran Islands. There are many excursions available to the visitors who do not have their own transport to these scenic and beautiful places as well as regular tours based within Galway City focusing on the history and the mediaeval past of the city. These are well worth taking the time to explore.
So, come ?Into the West? and discover Galway for yourself!
