Sweden's hostels are included in the relative prosperity of the country's high standard of living. Accommodations are clean, well kept, and well organized.

While Sweden is not as popular a travel destination as its sunny neighbors to the south like Italy and the south of France, the hostel scene is still quite good, with plenty of beds in each town and a helpful staff in almost every establishment.

Traveling around, Sweden, it seems like everyone is fit, blond, and rich. This country wide affluence is reflected in the hostel scene, but not in the prices. Budget travelers are still able to save money staying in a hostel and use some of their hard-earned travel money in the bars and clubs downtown.

In Sweden's capital of Stockholm, many of the hostels are located near the downtown area. This provides a perfect home base for heading out to bars and clubs and immersing yourself in Swedish culture. Then, if you happen to have one too many, your room is just a few minutes walk or an easy cab-ride away.

In other cities, hostels are not necessarily centered around the downtown nightlife, but where there are bars, there are a fair amount of rooms to be reserved, both shared and private if you're planning your trip and know what you're looking for.

Some hostels in Sweden are embedding themselves in the traveler entertainment market, offering pub crawls and city tours, or partnering with tour and event companies to bring you the best experience of their city that they can—for a small additional charge. But don't worry that the hostel will co-opt your experience of the city against your will. Stockholm at least, is a small enough city that meeting several people through a hostel activity will probably mean that you'll bump into them again sometime during your touring of the city.

Because Sweden is less popular to visit during its cold winter, seasonal closures at some hostels are common. There's nothing worse than the last minute scramble trying to find a room after you've planned your trip out beginning to end. By booking in advance, you can be sure to have a room to crash in if you arrive weary and bleary-eyed.

Sweden's hostel scene is growing and thriving as more and more people discover the beauty of Stockholm's islands and the charm of a country whose most common four letter words are SAAB, ABBA and IKEA. That is nothing but good for the independent traveler, who can enjoy more people to meet, things to see, activities and places to visit.
