Europe Hostels

Czech Republic hostels are sometimes less common than campsites, but there is still an established network of youth hostels in cities both big and small throughout the country.

The Czech Republic is often visited for its cheaper prices and its versatility as a jump-off point for trips around the rest of the continent. At the center of the Czech Republic, lies its most storied and beautiful city, Prague.

Prague's hostels are located within an easy journey of the picturesque and historic old-town, and outside of the historic district an inspired party scene revitalizes itself each night. Bars, clubs, and nightlife of all varieties surround the downtown area, and the hostels close proximity to all of this makes them an ideal place for resting your head each night as the bars close after last call.

That is not to say that Czech Republic hostels are dominated by debauchery. Youth hostels now cater to all ages and most traveling styles and Prague's artistic and historic sights are often as big a tourist draw as the excellent nightlife. Most often there is a large contingent of people who do and see both. And with a large student population however, the clubs and bars will stay full for many more semesters to come.

If you're worried about your privacy and your belongings while you stay, an increasing number of hostels are offering private rooms with shared bathrooms and other facilities to travelers. You'll have to go down the hall to brush your teeth, but your door will lock and your valuables will be there when you get back.

If your only option is a dormitory style room, rest assured that a majority of hostels in the Czech Republic separate sleeping accommodations based on gender. It is also a good idea, if staying in a room with many other travelers, to have a padlock with you. Many dorms have cabinets with lockable latches, but guests must provide their own lock and key.

The Czech Republic has historically been a cheaper destination than the rest of Europe. Czech Republic hostels start at the unbelievably cheap price of 150 koruna, which works out to about $7.50 for the bed for the night. Most hostel prices are closer to 350 or 400 koruna, but that is still only $17-$20 for lodging for the night. At those prices, you can afford to stay in Prague for quite awhile and many travelers do. But after awhile the question becomes, can you afford to leave?

Although Prague and the rest of the Czech Republic is a great destination all year round, there is a definite increase in the number of travelers in the spring and summer. As a result, many hostels close or do not staff their establishments as fully in the fall and winter. Booking online and making a reservation allows you to know with absolute certainty that you'll be sleeping in relative luxury, at least compared to those camp sites.
