Book the Best Hostels in Austria (Vienna)
Vienna isn’t known as much of a party city and it’s not on every backpacker’s must-visit list, but there is a lot to like about the Austrian capital, and its ultra-central location makes it a popular stopover for travelers, if only for a day or two. Prices of hotels in the city are quite high as this is a major business center, but fortunately prices at hostels in Vienna are quite reasonable.
The center of Vienna is very compact and quite a few of the city’s top attractions are all bunched together in this Old Town district. Unfortunately, not too many Vienna hostels are located right in the center, but several do have convenient locations. If you are coming only for a day or two you might be best off either staying in the center of town or near the West Train Station nearby.
The Schönbrunn Castle is the biggest single attraction around and it’s on the outskirts of the city. If visiting the castle is a top priority then a Vienna hostel nearby might be a good idea. Otherwise, the best nightlife (what there is of it) is in and around the Old Town, although almost all the hostels in Vienna either have bars or are near them.
The Blue Corridor Hostel has the most central location in Vienna. It’s just at the edge of the Inner ring of Old Town and just steps from the Museum Quarter and the theater district. If you want to be close to the center of Vienna this is the only great choice. Their cheapest bunks are in their 10-bed rooms starting around €15 per night in the low season, but they also have twin private rooms with shared bathrooms starting around €25 per night per person, which is a great price for a private room in this location. The Blue Corridor does have an age limit, but it’s a fairly liberal 14 through 45, as they feel that younger and older people can make it uncomfortable for those in the middle.
Wombat’s City Hostel is the newest addition to this mini hostel chain. This location is just steps from the West Train Station and is near the main retail district, and also walking distance from the Old Town Center. Beds in their 6-bunk dorm rooms start around €27 per night, with double private rooms starting around €36 per night per person. They have their own bar that is open from dusk until dawn, so finding a place to drink is never a problem.
The Hostel Huttledorf isn’t near the city center, but they are near the edge of the forest and they are the closest hostel to the castle. They have over 300 beds with the cheapest being in their 8-bunk dorms starting around €17 per night. This includes a breakfast buffet, free internet, and a number of other nice services for travelers, but don't book here if you want to be in the middle of things.
