Stockholm's hostels are spread throughout the city, over the thousands of islands that make up the political and cultural center of Sweden. As Stockholm, with its urban-yet-relaxed lifestyle and energy, has become a more popular tourist destination, the city's hostels have come to life.

Stockholm's tourism is also bolstered by a compact and tidy historical area at its core; a popular spot for a stroll through the history of the city.

The hostels in Stockholm are like the rest of the country, well kept and clean. Most of Stockholm's hostels are located in the center of the city, allowing for a very easy visit to most of the sights or downtown to go out at night. Many are within walking distance, although navigating Stockholm on foot can be tricky so taking a cab is sometimes preferable.

Hotels in Stockholm are a spendy option and not just because of the exchange rate. Stockholm's business center attracts many conventions and trade shows, which drive demand for the rooms sky-high. Hostels then, are a cheap alternative to a hotel and filled with adventuresome storytellers on vacation instead of button down corporate types trying to work.

Hostels have also been maneuvering to take a small piece of the market from hotels, investing a little bit in more comfortable, private rooms with shared bathroom facilities and showers. As a result of these upgrades, travelers of all persuasions are beginning to look at hostels as a housing option during their trip instead of just defaulting to stay in a hotel.

During the long days of Stockholm's summer, the weather is warm and the climate is mild. Come September however, the weather turns wet and the temperature dips a little bit. Booking your hostel online before you arrive allows you to make sure you don't get caught outside in the rain when you show up at your hostel. Because fewer travelers tour through Stockholm in the cold winter, some hostels implement seasonal closures during the snowy season. Booking in advance also keeps the occasional seasonal closure of some hostels from limiting your options when you get there.

Like many hostels in Europe, some of Stockholm's hostels are getting into the business of entertaining their guests while they are in town. Some Stockholm hostels offer tours of the town and pub crawls to bars with drink specials for guests of the hostel. This is not a free service, however, and most tours do charge a separate fee for the tour or crawl. If your hostel does not offer this service, start it your own pub crawl! Hostels are a perfect place to recruit some strangers into your drinking games.

Privacy can be an issue for guests of hostels, but many hostels are working to change that. A shared room at the City Backpackers hostel, for example, is generally kept for groups traveling together and is set up like its own apartment, set off from much of the rest of the hostel. The group room also comes with its own kitchen and Wi-Fi is free in every room.
