Book the Best Hostels in Italy (Rome)

Europe Hostels

The capital of Italy is enormous and hotel prices are strangely high, so it’s a good thing there are loads of hostels in Rome to help keep costs under control. The city has over 3 million people spread out in every direction, and the main attractions are spread out as well. This makes visiting the city a bit of a challenge, especially if you want to see everything in only two days or so. The traffic is chaotic and the city’s subway system consists of only two lines, one of which does go to the Vatican, but aside from that they aren’t terribly helpful for tourists.

The main concentration of budget hotels and hostels in Rome is near the main train station, Termini. The area just south of Termini is something of a backpackers’ ghetto as its filled with much of the city’s budget accommodation. Unfortunately it’s not a particularly nice area and also not really close to anything important, other than the train station itself, so if you are operating on anything over the smallest budget you might want to pay a bit more to be elsewhere.

The sights you are coming to see are sprinkled throughout the city, and there are pockets of Rome hostels in all different neighborhoods. The nightlife is also spread out, although there are pockets filled with bars in the Piazza Navona area, the Testaccio area, and the Trastevere area. You are going to have to either take the buses or taxis or do a lot of walking to see Rome no matter where you stay.

Also, be warned that Rome has some rather unusual seasons. July and August are almost always oppressively hot and humid so many tourists stay away. Prices for Rome hostels actually come down during the peak of summer, but it gets even more complicated. During the entire month of August half the city takes their annual vacations to the coasts so many places literally close for the entire month. All the main attractions will stay open, but many small bars and shops are shut tight, so it’s debatable whether the lower Rome hostel prices are worth it considering the terrible weather and the city being half closed.

Hostel Pink Floyd is in the area near the Termini Station and has beds in 6-bunk rooms starting around €24 per night. They have rooms with fewer beds that cost progressively more per person, all the way up to private singles and doubles with en-suite that start around €90 and €50 respectively.

The Mona Lisa Hostel also has a silly name, but at least it’s more centrally located for the main attractions. Beds in their 8-bunk dorm rooms start around €30 per night including breakfast and free internet. They have private 4-bed rooms starting around €50 per person, which sounds like a fortune, but isn’t too bad for this part of Rome.

Hostel Happy Days is closer to the Vatican so it’s got a far different feel than the places close to Termini Station. They have a large garden so this is a nice place if you’d like to relax, and Rome is a city where relaxing rarely comes easy. They have bunks in their 10-bed dorms starting around €22 per night.
