Half a million people inhabit Oslo, Norway, the capital of the country and a popular destination among international travelers. Other examples of Norwegian heritage can be observed by the curious traveler at the Akershus Castle and Fortress, where Norwegians would stand watch and scan for incoming ships to the harbor. The castle sits on a hill overlooking the bay and today offers travelers a stunning view of the sun setting into the ocean.

Both of these sights can be seen while using an Oslo hostel as a place to base your visit out of. Each museum is an easy day-trip from the hostels and by staying in a hostel you'll find that the staff is helpful and knowledgeable about the local sights and attractions. If there's one that you might be better off skipping in order to see a sight you hadn't considered, they will be able to tell you. Because of it's somewhat harsh climate, Oslo receives a significant increase in its tourism in the summer. Many of the hostels in Oslo are closed in the winter and before arriving, travelers should check with the hostel or book their room in advance online. Booking in advance allows you to guarantee a spot for you and your traveling companions before you even arrive and ensure that you will not be wandering Oslo looking for a room.

Some hostels in Oslo also leave the front desk after a certain hour and don't allow arrivals after 11 pm or midnight to get a room for the night. Check with the hostel or arrive early to check in and also check with the manager about a curfew or a time that the front door is locked. Although many European hostels are transferring to a combination keypad for the front door so that guests can return for the night anytime they want, it is often up to the guests to obtain this combination.
