In Nice, the hostels, the nightlife and restaurants all revolve around the water. Everything is snug against the Mediterranean Sea.

Travelers take to the south of France for its sublime temperatures and warm waters. More than just an adjective, Nice is also more than a tourist town. And you may find suns constant presence, the unyielding alacrity, and the laid back Mediterranean lifestyle hard to leave behind.

Nice hostels are a cheaper alternative to the resorts and hotels that offer luxurious accommodations to those with the funds to enjoy it. Staying in a hostel allows you to experience the culture and art of Nice as well as the beach and to do it from the center of the city you are trying to enjoy.

Once you've seen what Nice has to offer, follow the high rollers to Monaco—an hour away by train—and see the cutting edge of haute-couture fashion and some of the nicest cars money can buy. Bring your best clothes, throw around a bunch of cash in the casino and tell people you're staying in a Monte Carlo hotel and no one will know the difference.

An hour in the other direction, Cannes is another posh place to spend the days between your nights in Nice. Although it does not revolve around the gambling industry like Monte Carlo, it does offer the budget traveler a chance to indulge in some high-class dining and people watching, as well as the chance to shop for some designer clothes.

If you can resist the Dior handbags or a custom made Versace suit, you'll come out ahead in the end and you won't have to unpack and repack your backpack more than is necessary.

Comparing Nice to Monte Carlo and Cannes is not fair to the fair city; Nice is a vibrant and interesting place that should be enjoyed for what it is: an attainable Mediterranean destination sandwiched between unreal luxury.

You can get a room in one of Nice's hostels for about 17 Euros a night. That's a shared room however, and private rooms jump to about 27. There is something to be said, however, for accommodations that allow you to lock your valuables away in your room during the day while you set out for the beach, a museum or Nice or Cannes.

Shared rooms come with cabinets that have latches you may be able to lock, but often you'll have to provide your own lock or rent one from the reception desk.

Nice hostels are close to the water, where everything happens, so it is easy to go out at night without worrying about buses running at night or finding a taxi. Some hostels do impose curfews however, and most have some sort of locking system that will keep you out in the wee hours of the morning when you return if you don't check with the front desk about a combination for the front door or a time by which you must return.
