Book the Best Hostels in Germany (Munich)
The whole idea of youth hostels started in Germany over 100 years ago so you’d expect the country’s second most-visited city to have quite a selection and you’d be right. Berlin is larger and is the capital again, but Munich has been a desirable spot for Germans as well as foreigners for many decades. This is where you’ll find the country’s best climate and general standard of living. Due to this, the hotels in the central part of the city can get quite expensive. The hostels in Munich can be really good bargains, and most are not just for the young anymore.
Munich is a very large and spread out city without a heavily built-up center. Most of what you’ll see has been rebuilt since the heavy bombing of World War II, but there are still plenty of restored and original buildings to make it a special place. But in spite of not having a dense business district in its core, the vast majority of the interesting attractions for travelers are located in the city center anyway.
This makes the city convenient to visit on foot, even though the public transportation is typically efficient, just as you’d expect in Germany. Most of the Munich hostels are located in the neighborhood around the Hauptbahnhof, which means “main train station” and is what they call it in every German city of any size.
In some cities the area around the train station is seedy and run down, but Munich’s isn’t too bad. And the heart of the city is a short walk just east of the station so staying in this neighborhood is convenient not only for travel connections, but also to be close to everything at the same time.
The 4 You Munchen is next to the Hauptbahnhof. Beds in their 12-bunk rooms start around €18 per night including a breakfast buffet. They also have twin private rooms with shared bathroom from about €32 per person, and they are one of the few Munich hostels to offer single private rooms with en-suite from around €55.
If you are coming for Oktoberfest you might consider the Meininger City Hostel Munich, which is next to the Theresienwiese - the site of that famous late-September boozefest. The places near the Hauptbahnhof are only a short stumble away themselves, but if you want to be right on top of the action the Meininger City Hostel has bunks in their dorm rooms for around €20 per night including a breakfast buffet and many other extras.
Needless to say, if you are coming for Oktoberfest you’ll need to book way in advance to have any hope of being anywhere near the festivities. Munich hostels are full all summer due to the excellent weather and all the outdoor activities available in the Bavarian Alps nearby, but they are absolutely packed and at their most expensive during the three-week beer party.
