Book the Best Hostels in England (Manchester)
Long overlooked by international visitors, England’s second largest city is now definitely on the upswing. With a city center that has been transformed in the last decade or so from industrial and grim to trendy and surprising, Manchester is now drawing in curious visitors. Hotels aren’t nearly as expensive as they are in London, but it’s still nice to know there are a few Manchester hostels that make visiting even more affordable. The movement has come late to this city, but it’s expected there will be more hostels in Manchester every year.
For many decades Manchester has been mainly known for industry, their famous football team, and for their vibrant music scene. Unfortunately there are no Manchester hostels near Old Traford, where Man U. plays their home games, but the transit system is good so getting to a game or the stadium museum is not a problem regardless of where you are staying.
A couple of the Manchester hostels are located within the city center area so they are a good bet if you’d like to check out some of the local music clubs. This is a large and very cosmopolitan city with a few pockets of interesting nightlife in different areas, but it’s also loaded with over 50 museums, all with free entry, and most are in the city center area.
The Hatters Hostel is centrally located in the city’s bohemian Northern Quarter. This is the most notorious creative district filled with small clothes shops and fun bars. The cheapest beds at the Hatters are in their 18-bunk room, starting around £15 per night, but beds in rooms with as few as 4 bunks are only a bit more. They’ve also got private twin and single rooms with shared bathrooms starting around £25 per person per night. Particularly if you are on your own and want a bit of privacy, this is a great deal in this neighborhood. Breakfast is included for all guests, and the Hatters organizes pub crawls every Thursday night.
The Hilton Chambers isn’t a Hilton hotel – it’s on Hilton Street – but it does have private rooms and many other features not found in most hostels. They are also located in the city’s Northern Quarter, so they are a great choice if you want to check out the bars and live music venues around the neighborhood. Their cheapest bunks are in their 10-bed rooms starting around £14 per night, but they have beds in rooms with as few as 4 total bunks for only a bit more. They have private twin and double rooms with their own bathrooms starting around £27 per person per night. All guests get a complimentary continental breakfast, but there is a restaurant just downstairs that serves the full English breakfast if you want more than just a roll and some coffee.
The YHA Manchester isn’t directly in the city center, but it’s not far out. Their rooms all have either 4 or 6 beds with bathrooms in each, starting around £19 per bed per night with a buffet breakfast included. They’ve got a restaurant and a small bar as well as free internet access.
