Located on the southernmost tip of Finland, Helsinki is the capital of Finland as well as its most populous city. Helsinki is situated on the water, spread over a series of islands and peninsulas that provide a stunning view and proximity to the calming water almost anywhere in the city.

Helsinki, a city of 500,000 people, is unique in that there is almost nowhere in the city that could be considered a slum or ghetto. While there is a growing class divide in the city, the difference does not manifest itself geographically and the entire city is considered a safe place for travelers and locals.

Helsinki hostels are most popular in the summers, when the climate is milder and the warm sea currents bring the average temperature is up to the 70's and 80's. During the winters, the days shorten, the temperature drops and the city hovers right around freezing while the city is immersed in darkness most of the days.

If you are planning to travel to Helsinki in the summer, it is recommended that you book a hostel in advance. Helsinki has few hostels and they can book up in the high tourist season of June, July and August.

Rooms in Helsinki are available starting at 16 Euros a night, but most of the city's accommodations are not nearly as easy on your budget. An average price for a hostel is 28 Euros, and prices only go up when you start looking at hotels. Helsinki's hostels are more spread throughout the city than most, and often hostels will be on different islands.

Because of their affordability, hostels are becoming popular with travelers that would normally stay in hotels. That is, hostels aren't just for grungy backpackers anymore. With optional private rooms and new amenities like washers and dryers available, more and more travelers are choosing to save a few dollars and stay in a hostel instead of paying more for housekeeping to make their bed everyday.

With half a million people, Helsinki is a smaller city by European standards and while it's relatively high student population frequents the city's bars and clubs, it is far more common to go out to a quiet cafe or a pub.

Helsinki is small in area as well as population and it is possible to walk through most of the city. Nighttime walks are popular and the winter's long stretches of darkness have inspired some interesting night lights to see on strolls through the city. In winter, walks along Helsinki's frozen sea are common.

The hostels in Helsinki bring together the city's most interesting travelers and conversing at the hostels themselves can provide a night of entertainment as well. Cultures from all over the world merge in a youth hostel common room and among the ping-pong tables, vending machines and Internet kiosks, you'll find travelers swapping stories and tall tales while trying to better the last story told.
