In Hamburg, the social scene and the nightlife revolve around the Reeperbahn, Germany's most extreme and popular red-light district.

In a Hamburg hostel, the chances of having a good night out on the town are near 100% if you want them to be, and the ease of enjoyment often keeps travelers there an extra night or two.

Although everyone's night out usually takes them by the Reeperbahn at some point, its bright lights and loud crowds are not universally appealing and a more laid-back night can be found at one of Hamburg's many live music venues, where drinks cost more than a Euro and do not come in a test-tube shot glass glowing from the black lights.

A vast majority of Hamburg's hostels, in fact, are located in the somewhat neutral ground near the train station. Maybe this is because the Hauptbahnhof is at the center of everything and provides easy transportation to whatever sites you're going to see that day, maybe it's because far too many travelers were scheduling morning trains and missing them after an A.M. sprint from their hostel to their platform.

In either case, Hamburg's hostels are a great way to save some money on accommodations during your trip. Hamburg's hostels are also not just for the wandering backpacker. Because of their cheap price, convenient location, and relatively nice rooms, hostels are becoming popular with travelers that might normally stay in hotels.

Many hostels in Hamburg have recognized this and are now offering even more hotel-like rooms to draw more business away from hotels. Hostels are now offering private rooms with only shared showers and bathroom facilities for an increased price over the shared rooms, but still for much less than the local hotel down the street.

The popular hostel chain A&O offers beds in Hamburg for as little as 14 Euros per night. That A&O is located away from the main hub of things in Hamburg and if you want to be closer to the action, the price of an A&O bed jumps to 20 euros. These are still some of the best deals in town however, a hotel room in Hamburg hovers around 30 to40 euros and the only thing extra you get is a shower.

There are several idiosyncrasies to be aware of when staying in a hostel in Hamburg. First, some hostels require a minimum stay of two nights. If that affects your travel plans it might be wise to seek lodging elsewhere. Also, although it is becoming less common, some hostels in Germany impose curfews and times that the reception desk closes and locks the building for the night. It may still be possible to get in the door and up to your room, but not without a code for the door, which may have some sort of keypad. Check with the hostel manager or attendants to see if you should worry about getting inside when you return.

Many hostels advertise these things when you book your reservation ahead of time on their website, so plan ahead and make a reservation to save yourself some headache later.
