Europe Hostels

Budapest hostels embody everything that you've come to expect from a traditional hostel. Large rooms full of bunk-beds, cheap prices, and lots of travelers making your hostel experience a diverse one.

Split in half by the Danube, Budapest used to be two separate cities facing each other across the river. The cities of Buda and Pest merged way back in 1873 however, and with the ease of transport across the river, the two have successfully become one city.

Most of the hostels in Budapest are cheap places to crash for the night—exactly what is needed for most of the travelers coming through the beautiful and historic city. Rooms in Budapest start at 10 Euros for a bunk in a dorm full of other travelers, and many of the shared rooms are comparable to that price. A private room in Budapest can be had for as little as 12 Euros per night, but the average for a private room is more like 17.

Budapest is perhaps even more beautiful at night, so a night time stroll through the city is in order while you are here. Be aware that some accommodations, in the old hostel tradition, have set curfews for their guests and too long a stroll might find you locked out with no one at the front desk to let you in to your room. More and more hostels are moving to a keypad and combination lock on the front door so that guests can come and go according to their own schedules, but be aware that a nighttime curfew is often followed by a morning wake up call to get you up and checked out of the room in order to check in the next night's batch of travelers.

You may save so much money on your hostel that you'll want to spend the day shopping in Budapest. The city is a shopper's mecca and the two main shopping streets are Andrássy Avenue and Váci utca, both a haven for the designer and luxury brands that a discerning eye can save a bundle on. Andrássy Avenue is more than a shopping street though, its thoughtful houses fronting the street and decorative architecture of the neo-renaissance palaces were beautiful enough for the street to be named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.

Budapest hostels cater to backpacker types trying to stretch a dollar as far as it will go, but there are accommodations in hostels for those looking to save a little money without sacrificing their privacy or comfort. Hostels are now starting to offer private rooms with shared facilities and shared bathrooms. Guests are able to sleep separated from other travelers and lock their valuables behind their own door when they head out to see the city for the day, but they are also able to meet the kinds of people that travel the world collecting stories and want to share them with fellow travelers. While private rooms are available, they are not abundant in Budapest so book your hostel stay online before you arrive and be sure that you have exactly the accommodations you want.
