Bruges (Brugge in Dutch) probably rivals only Venice as a European city that would be virtually non-existent without the constant flow of tourists. This is a postcard city if there ever was one. The entire town center is perfectly preserved in a way that makes you feel more like you are in Disneyland than in a European city. Tourism is practically the only game in town, but it’s still worth a visit. Hotels are quite expensive due to the constant demand of new visitors. Fortunately there are many hostels in Bruges to keep the city within reach of budget travelers.

Bruges is also a city that fills up with busloads of tourists in the morning that all disappear just after dinner or even before. This gives the city something of a magical quality in the early morning and late evening hours, which is all the more reason to book a hostel in Bruges for at least one night. The entire city can be explored in about 24 hours so two nights is about the most you’d need, and booking just a single night in a Bruges hostel is very common.

In most European cities we stress that being near the city center is highly recommended even if you have to pay a few more Euros for the privilege, but in Bruges that isn’t really a problem. The city itself is so small that it doesn’t matter where you stay as long as it’s within the main city limits. Still, beware of any place that is out in the suburbs that is trying to dupe unsuspecting travelers into thinking they are close in. In Bruges you are either in the city or you aren’t.

St. Christopher’s Bauhaus Hostel is located in the city itself and their cheapest beds are in their 8-bed dorms starting around €12 per night. They’ve got rooms with fewer beds for a bit less per night, as well as twin private and 3-bed private rooms with shared bathrooms for around €20 per night. This is a great deal if you are traveling in a small group and want a bit of privacy mixed in with your Bruges hostel experience. Breakfast is included and they have a restaurant and bar, and they also have specials on bike rentals.

The Snuffel Backpacker Hostel is also within the city limits and they have some of the cheapest beds in town. Their 14-bed dorms start around €11 per night with beds in their smaller rooms only a few Euros more per night. This is a busy and highly recommended place so book early if you know your date of arrival. They have walking tours and cheap bike rentals as well as their own bar stocked with dozens of different Belgian beers.

Charlie Rockets Bruges Hostel is located in an old movie theater right in the center of the city. Rooms in their 6-bed dorms start around €16 per night and they also have a restaurant, a bar, and bike rentals.
