London's coastal neighbor to the south, Brighton hostels are often less expensive than the big city and offers a very different experience of the country. Brighton is no stranger to tourists, the city has been a popular destination since its inception; in fact it was created as a resort town in the 18th century and popularized as a day-trip destination when the railways connected it with London.

Brighton is the beach of choice for families from London in the summer, but the city attracts few people looking for several weeks of fun in the sun. Brighton's hostels are full of backpackers and travelers relaxing for a day in between visits to other sights and locals from London dropping down for a weekend.

The city of Brighton is designed with commerce in mind, stores and shop fronts nudge up as close to the water as possible and it is easy to take a break from the sand to walk along the promenades and search through the privately owned shops for treasures beyond the kind you can find on the beach.

With highs in the 70's Fahrenheit and 20's Celsius during the summer, Brighton is not your typical sun drenched beach haven. In fact, the city is on a similar latitude to Vancouver, Canada. But the beaches are nonetheless popular and after a lukewarm day in the sun is over, many visitors pack the pubs and bars at night.

Some hostels in Brighton, especially those away from the beach and the center of town, may impose a curfew on residents. Check with your hostel manager if you think that that is going to be a problem for you.

A room in a Brighton hostel starts at 16 pounds per night for a shared room, away from the beach. Private rooms are more expensive, and rooms closer to the beach are even more expensive than that, coming in between 25 and 40 pounds per night.

Staying in one of Brighton's hostels can be a good way to meet people as well as provide a place to stay. Travelers invariably collect stories as they go, and swapping tall tales is almost a rite of passage during a European backpacking trip.

But the hostel industry is starting to get more personalized and exclusive as it learns it can compete with hotels. Offering private rooms with shared facilities like bathrooms and showers is pulling hostels closer to hotels in comfort and privacy and allowing hostels to take some of their business.

All of this benefits the independent traveler, because while private rooms take up some space that could be used for shared rooms in another situation, there is a simultaneous market for the increased privacy and peace of mind of having your own room where you can stow valuables and lock them behind a door while you explore the city.
