Bordeaux may sound more familiar as a type of wine than somewhere you might stay in a hostel, but be assured, Bordeaux's hostels are as fine as its wines.

Bordeaux is located in the southwestern part of France, just miles inland from theAtlantic ocean. Known for its wines, as well as a cutting edge technology industry, you will experience the marriage of some of the most advanced technology in the world being produced in a culturally rich and historically significant French town.

Bordeaux hostels are present, if not prevalent, and they provide a cheap way to see the established wine country while not blowing your whole budget so that you can't afford to take home a bottle or two.

Rooms in Bordeaux can be found for as low as 11 Euros per night, but the average price is about double that, about 22 Euros. Prices go up from there for a private room or hotel.

If you're a fan of the Eagles, you might want to check out the downtown hostels: Hotel California and Hotel California II. These well-kept accommodations could be heaven for you and they definitely won't be hell. Check out is in the morning however, and you'll have to leave.

If you are traveling with any aspiring oenophiles, a trip to the Bordeaux wine country is a necessity. Bordeaux is perhaps most famous for its wines and in the surrounding countryside the city supports its 14.5 billion euro economy of wine with 117,000 hectares of vineyards. Recently however, overproduction among Bordeaux's competitors has flooded the market and fewer growers are still producing wine. This has primarily hurt the vineyards producing inexpensive bottles of wine but the trickle effect of the loss of business has affected nearly every vineyard.

Bordeaux's other main industry is technology. The Laser Megajoule will be the most powerful laser in the world when it is completed in 2010 and represents an investment of nearly two billion euros by the French government. Bordeaux's economy is also dependent on an aeronautics industry that produces some of the more destructive pieces of the French military arsenal. Technology and aeronautics are not as much of a tourist draw—tours are not available of the factories—but the industry's presence in the peaceful city gives a glimpse of its character.

Bordeaux's hostels are generally without curfews and with 24 hour desk service. The fun nightlife of the city can be thanked for that, if hostels locked up their doors before midnight, there would hardly be anyone to sleep in the rooms.

The Bordeaux nightlife has something for everyone, from breastbone rattling bass in clubs to cozy pubs. For the loud music and bright lights scene, check out the "Quai de Paludate" (Paludate Pier). For a more relaxed and laid back music scene in a comfortable bar, the Place du Parlement is a new fun street to walk along and duck into one of the clubs for a drink and a set of music. If it's not your style, just head down the street to something that strikes your ear as a bit more appealing.
